The Hoochery distillery is Western Australias only legal distillery producing Ord River Rum and other spirits. Tours and cellar door sales available.
Owner, developer and farmer Spike Dessert fell in love with the Kimberley when he saw it in 1972. With the onset of Sugar Cane being grown in the Ord River Valley in 1995 he saw a way to diversify his dream and created the Hoochery - currently Western Australias only legal distillery.
Now if you are wondering about the name Hoochery - well the name was trademarked by Spike from the word Hooch which goes back to the Hutanuwu (later modified to Hoochinoo) Indian tribe of Alaska who made alcoholic liquor - this is until it became the more popular name for the illegal activity of bootlegging! Built on his farm just outside of Kununurra in the heart of the beautiful Ord River Valley is a small pot distillery, which has the capacity to produce over 50,000 bottles of Ord River Rum a year. Our Ord River Rum is thought to be the very first Rum ever produced in Western Australia and is gaining an excellent reputation for being a genuine traditional premium rum.

The Hoochery Distillery is open all year round. Roll up for a guided tour, then stay on for a piece of our famous Ord River Rum Cake and a Coffee or Tea. Also, you must come out and view "Desert Sirens"a mural by Kimberley Kohan.

sat - 9am top 12 noon

mon to sun 9am to 4pm
we do tours daily at 11am and 2pm
Distillery Tours
Tours of our distillery are $12.00 for adults (children are free) You will be taken on a 30 minute tour of a working still and the production area (subject to change).

Farm Tours
A 2 hour, guided tour around a fully operational irrigation property in the Ord Irrigation Area, explaining the past and present of agriculture in the Ord.
A detailed description on irrigation systems, soil types and various crops including Sugarcane, Sandalwood Forestry, Hybrid Seed Production and Horticulture.
Bookings are essential.
The Hoochery is located a 10 minute drive from town along Weaber Plains Road. 1km past Stock Route Rd Intersection.
