State Records Office of Western Australia

The State Records Office of Western Australia (SRO) operates under the auspices of the State Records Act 2000 as an independent Government agency within the Department of Culture and the Arts.

The custodian of WAs largest archival collection, the SRO is responsible for:
-:- providing records management and archival services to State and local government agencies in WA
-:- identifying and preserving the States archives
-:- providing reference services for clients who wish to access the State archives collection

The State archives collection comprises a wealth of historical information created by Colonial, State and Local Government authorities, since British settlement commenced in 1829.

The SRO ensures the public have access to these archives by providing information about them on AEON, the SROs online catalogue of State archives, and through the provision of a purpose built Search Room in the Alexander Library Building in the Perth Cultural Centre. In recent years the SRO has also been making digitised copies of State archives available online via AEON, for example WAs historical maps and plans.

Through the State Records Act 2000, the SRO also delivers records management and archival services to State and Local Government agencies, the responsibility for approving the disposal of State records being vested in the State Records Commission. Training, consultancy advice and standards development are provided to improve the quality of records management practices throughout government, fostering a government-wide approach to best practice recordkeeping.
