School bullies - Parents United Against Bullying
MOST adults have dark memories of the childhood bullies who brutalised them at school. But bullying is no longer acceptable in the school yard. Today, Americas Cup winning skipper John Bertrand is fighting to rid schools of "the jungle mentality". He wants governments to become involved. He chairs the Alannah and Madeline Foundation whose highly successful Buddy Bear anti-bullying program is in 600 schools in Victoria and New South Wales.

Bertrand is 56, but still recalls the terror he experienced at the hands of a 14-year-old bully at Mordialloc-Chelsea High. In November, the foundation and its National Coalition Against Bullying will host a two-day conference in Melbourne. This initiative deserves the support of all parents who want their children to enjoy their schooling free from louts.
